During the first examination the dental surgeon has to know about patient's
medical history. Patient has to fill a medical acquainted questionnaire highlighting
necessary precautions before any treatment. For example a diabetic must have an
antibiotic therapy before any treatment creating blood and mouth communication.
At that time or during an ordinary checkup, urgent cares must be done.
After facial examination for finding eventual abnormality as swelling, trismus, facial
paralysis, grindings in temporomandibular joint and so on, the buccal examination
begins if there is no obvious urgent care to perform.
The aim of this examination is to find eventual toothdecay and buccal abnormality.
It is first visual, naturally toothdecay may be visible, but also with a particular light
toothdecay can be found .
So teeth must be scaled and polished for a better vision.
Dental thread is used to detect toothdecay between teeth, normally thread is intact after
use and if a toothdecay exists, in this case the thread is cut by enamel surrounding
toothdecay. Dental thread also detect too large space between teeth responsible of
alimentary fillings synonimous of toothdecay.
The dentist's sharpened probe detect holes created by toothdecay.
Also tooth cold or hot water sensitive can indicate a toothdecay or an abscess.
After all these steps if doubt exists a radiography is useful.
Each detected toothdecay must be writed down and a chronological treatment planning
ordered by seriousness of detected toothdecays will be done.
